Why one ear? Long forelocks were traditionally left upbraided in western performance competitions, and brow bands get in the way and tangle the forelock hair, the one ear style was often preferred. In order to stabilize the bridle from sliding back onto the neck without tangling the forelock in a brow-band, the one ear style can be used. The brow-band serves the same function as the one ear attachment, and is just a matter of keeping the crown piece (poll strap) of the bridle in place behind the ears over the poll. The one-ear piece is independent of the headstall and can be moved into the most comfortable position to accommodate the position of your horse's ear, just as the brow-band can be moved into the most comfortable position.
